Judith Halberston, The Queer Art of Failure
We met 10/22, at 2 pm in the library, the members present were Emily, Kendall, Harper, and AvaBlu.

Questions:
In what ways does children’s media unexpectedly carry queer or anti-capitalist messages? Are queer and anti-capitalist messaging inherently linked, why does Halbertson frame them together?
Give more examples of animated movies that include hidden queer allegories, what concepts are presented and why do you think they are included?
Is failure actually a privilege for some people? Can everyone fail safely, or do factors like race and class change what failure means?
Halberstam argues “It is only in the realm of animation that we actually find the alternative hiding.” Do you agree with the opinion that subversive messaging can only be achieved through animation, if not why?
Could Halberstam’s writing itself be a way of rejecting what the academic world sees as success? How does the tone fight the usual “norm” academia deems as “correct”?
