Topic: Photoshop
Enhances- Extends our ability to create visually complex images, replacing traditional media with an easier and faster option. Photoshop allows users to precisely edit their images to almost any form they want that traditional media can't always allow for. It gives you the option to crop, edit, filter, duplicate, and draw on, while always being able to undo any action or mistake.
Reverses- It can erase what some may consider impurities or unwanted objects within images. As a result, it can create something that appears one way digitally when in reality it could be completely different. It creates an alternate reality in a way, taking away from the original intention and form of art. When developing film photographs, there may be “imperfections” that are created as a result of the process. This is a hallmark of the process of creating, and while photoshop is easy to edit, it takes away from the uniqueness of an individual’s creative experience and process.
Obsolesces - Photoshop strips traditional art forms of their need to be precise, removing the human hand’s imperfections. It replaces the need for manual cameras since you can edit photos and adjust settings like exposure and contrast, easily applying filters to adjust the lighting or white balance. The usage of photoshop adds a layer of superficiality, and removes the usage of the physical camera and the film development process. It strips the importance of the raw image and erases the need for the film development process, relying more heavily on digital camera and photo editing.
Retrieves- The retrieval of traditional art mediums is found in imitated brush styles, replicating non digital media methods of creation. More examples include cutting images, replacing traditional scrapbooking methods and mixed media physical studies, and the filter gallery options they have. You can retrieve traditional oil painting style with the press of a button, this older media form is being brought back digitally.
